Art is a
mirror of life. Every time an artist sees an imaginary vision or feel a
certain unusual inspiration he or she will find an unique opportunity to
express that idea or dream the only possible way to reflect them in images
which could be put on canvas, if he is a painter, or to solve his artist
prospect suited to his individual profession. The concept of life, as an artist
perceives it, will be imitated and reflected in his final creation.
The fabulous collection of modern art, so called THE
MIX recently prepared to be published by Artodox Publishing in San Francisco is
presented by artists of merit from Russia, was gather together representing the
past 60 years of Russian history cultural achievement. This display of pages
full of creative envisioned subject matters, the second half of the XX century
has to offer, will delight the eye of any connoisseur of the modern art and
beyond doubt enrich him with insight in the powerful style and realm of
mysticism of this notable accumulation.
In this collection of thirty seven plates each artist
is representing his own concept of art through the array of colors, shapes,
shadows and lights from traditional to the advent-guard, from realistic to
symbolic and abstract thus sharing the ultimate range of style and ideas
experimenting with new forms and subject matters. The paintings in this
extraordinary collection representing modern Russia will lift up the iron
curtain of the mystery of the culture that not all of the Western or New World
was able to see, experience and fully comprehend.
Many of the presented on pages artists and their
works have been already introduced to the free world, were greatly appreciated,
acknowledged and displayed. Their works founded place in the best museums,
galleries and private residences in USA, Great Britain, Germany, Russia,
Holland, France, Italy, Spain, Canada and Japan. The artists were given the
highest honors for their works which they deserved.
This time an individual who seeks the trill of
finding out the best of the “Mystic Russia” will be greatly rewarded by
acquiring the taste, choice and diversity of subjects displayed on all
stunningly arranged pages.
The style and execution of each represented picture
is completely unique: the idea of the display is original and eye-catching. The
right side of the page shows the intended subject shown in full view on oil
canvas or in watercolors with added dimension for full impact. Each plate is
individual and demanded a full attention. The left side serves as a diversion
from the displayed subject but at the same time complimented the site of
different birth places the artists did came from. Etched in the pages are
fragments of great works of art Russian cities are famous for: a glimpse of a
cathedral, an equestrian monument or Peter the Great, a row of royal residences
along the river Neva, a steeple of church, a lonely lamppost or a fragment of
an ornate fence. All images of the past are contrary to the idea of a modern
conception.
In conclusion to the brief review of the coming
publication of THE MIX collection it has to be said - this kaleidoscope of
mirrored images will open the door into the new century full of hopes and new
ideas along the avenues of life.

THE MIX
Northern
Russia, primarily St. Petersburg and Novgorod, is home to an exciting and
long-standing tradition of innovation in the arts. In an attempt, perhaps, to
escape vicariously from the almost interminable winters of Russia’s far north,
the painters of this region are noted for their willingness to go beyond the
bounds of convention in order to come up with warmer and more exciting uses of
color and style.
Novgorod… ancient cradle of Slavic culture…
virtually synonymous with the Icon, that treasure of Russian religious life that
has inspired Russian artists for a thousand years and is still an important art
form in itself. During the last Millennium this ancient city has become an Icon
of sorts, serving as a focal point for the deepest longings of the Russian
people. It is also, interestingly enough, the home of Russian Realism.
St. Petersburg, au contraire…the Venice of the
North and like its namesake a locus of artistic and architectural genius…
Russia’s Window on the West, whose mix of the indigenous and the European has
given rise to movements that are at once wholly international and uniquely
Russian.
In our desire to bring out the eclecticism that
defines modern Russian art we have named the collection “The MIX”. Through the
works shown here we have conjoined several themes that are widely dissimilar:
the traditional and the avant - guard; the symbolic and realistic; the
figurative and the abstract. Since the goal of this collection is, above all, to
show the captivating diversity of contemporary Russian art, we believe the title
of the collection to be an apt one.
Drawing on the buildings and monuments of
Novgorod for their inspiration, Dmitry Zhuravlev, Vitaly Stukov, Edward Ivanov,
Grigory Shtender (1927-1992) - all members of the Novgorod department of the
Union of Russian Artists - have relied on these venerable sites as their primary
source of subject matter. And, in doing so, Zhuravlev and Shtender have attained
a degree of distinction that has allowed them to stand out even in this
distinguished group. Deeply influenced by the exquisite enameled jewelry boxes
of old Novgorod, the former’s works are characterized by their intricate use of
the color red - a trait shown to maximum effect, perhaps, in St. George’s
Battle with the Dragon. (The same word is used for both “red” and
“beautiful” in the Russian language.)
The paintings of Mr. Shtender, whose “day job“ is
that of professional restorer, tend to glorify Russia’s most notable
architectural achievements. Through a careful and muted use of color, they may
be said to pay homage to the pale yet subtle cast of a far Northern light while
showing the influence of the monumental frescos of the earliest churches of
Novgorod (Vyazhische).
The illustrator Boris Nepomnyaschy, however,
draws on a wide variety of themes for his subject matter. Winner of the coveted
title of National Artist of Russia, he is highly regarded for his mastery of the
art of etching after having created a bookplate for former Russian President
Boris Yeltsin.
The main branch of the collection, however,
consists of the works of a group of St. Petersburg artists. St. Petersburg,
traditionally a center of aesthetic non-conformism, is home to the two principal
regional art academies - the College of Repin Art Academy and The Academy of
Industrial Art and Design. In these two institutions the major currents of the
Northern Russian art world are brought together. Occupying opposite ends of the
academic spectrum, the former functions as a center of classical art education
and the latter as - of innovation.
Perhaps the most famous of the St. Petersburg
group is Vladimir Ovchinnikov, one of the most distinguished members of the
Russian art underground of the seventies. Well known in Europe and the United
States, his paintings occupy a well-deserved place as exemplars of modern visual
art. (American viewers can find his works in the Metropolitan Museum and in the
Norton and Nancy Dodge Collection at the Zimmerly Art Museum). Characterized by
a brutally frank perspective (Two on the Roof), his creations depict – in
the style of Social Realism that bloomed in the 1930’s - the universal theme of
human fragility in a cold and indifferent world. The thrust of Mr. Ovchinnikov’s
work may be described as the attempt to show the stamp of the eternal in the
commonplace; and it is a device which he uses to great effect. The artist holds,
by the way, the post of chairman of the International Federation of Artists.
Bringing together the many currents of the St. Petersburg art world, this
organization has greatly facilitated our attempt to gather the work of so many
renowned artists in one exhibition.
Sergey Sergeev played a key role as a founding
father of the outlawed unofficial art movement of the Soviet era. Admirably
exceeding the bounds of their genre, his “Metaphysical Still-Lives” bring out
subtly and forcefully the hidden esoterica of their subject matter while imbuing
the beholder with the feeling of just having had a peek at the Far Side (Kimmerijsky
Still life).
Another group of artists - Arthur Molev, Yuri
and Galina Sychev, Alexander Korolev – avoid the temptation to plumb the depths
in favor of a lighter and more innocent world; one that is rendered with an
almost fantastic blend of color. From the childlike yet effective use of blues
in Molev’s Physics Games to Korolev’s masterful evocation of a woman’s
emotional aura in a series of pictures devoted to his wife (She, Julia
is Reading) to the symbolic richness of the works of Yuri Sychev (Playing
with Stones, Sunflowers Harvest) these pieces command our attention
through a primitive and energetic use of color and light. The abstract images of
Galina Sycheva (Good morning, Queen Beatrice), on the other hand, give
off the quieter bouquet of feminine irony; replete with shades of sarcasm and a
bewitching air of mystery.
Characterized by their youthfulness and
daring, the works of the above mentioned group stand in stark contrast to those
of Anatoly Zaslavsky. Outstanding in their thematic integrity, his paintings
have excited both Russian and American audiences in their artful appreciation of
life’s most common moments. Having lived for some time in the United States
(among his American works is Mountain in Colorado), Mr. Zaslavsky is a
member of The Contemporary Academy of Art. Among the Academy’s achievements is
its record of aid and nourishment to, in its diehard dedication to the cause of
artistic freedom, some of the most radical Russian painters in Russia today.
Valery Valran, a luminary of the St.
Petersburg art underground of the eighties and a participant in the largest
unofficial exhibitions of Soviet times, is yet another artist who communicates
chiefly through the medium of the still-life. A psychologist by profession (he
has an academic degree in that field), his works are those of a thinker whose
ability to give artistic voice to his sensibility has been lauded again and
again by his many fans.
His glasses and bottles, painted with a
skilful blend of pastels and light tones seem to float on the canvas in a haze
of ethereal pastels. Thus left “holding the bag” psychologically speaking; we
viewers may well have to make an extra effort to return safely from this
borderline world after having just gazed on this collection of normal objects
endowed with a hint of the otherworldly.
Alexander Bazarin is a talented painter who
(according to Valran) has created his own iconography of St. Petersburg;
transforming well-known views of the city into scenes that reflect the outer
limits of a child’s most elaborate fantasy. Described as being stylistically
both romantic and effusive his works abound in nursery-room tones with a
particular emphasis on mother-of-pearl and striking shades of blue.
European art lovers are familiar with
Constantine Troitsky, since so many of his works have found a home in the
museums and private collections of France and Germany. Notwithstanding the
effect of classical European art on his style, his paintings remain stubbornly
individualistic in their use of the so-called “object-shadow style”. Relying on
a subtle use of light and shade - the former to create the illusion of wide open
spaces and the latter to underscore critical details (Pink Landscape) -
his creative world also suggests a hint of the transcendent in the realm of the
everyday.
Alexander Krylov is a jeweler by profession.
Maybe that is the reason his paintings bring out the sensuousness and
tangibility of the material world. Delightfully free, as they are, of the burden
of being true-to-life, his kettles and vessels and other such objects border on
the downright fantastic. Because of this tendency to glorify the universal
in the everyday, his works have gained a large following in East Asia.
Gafur Mendagaliev’s works are distinguished by
their southern voluptuousness. Succeeding as they do in bringing out the state
of perpetual change in the world of the everyday, these highly animated works
turn the greyest St. Petersburg streets into a veritable tapestry of artistic
emotion.
Alexander Dobrovolsky, Viktor Tatarenko, Yuri
Zenin and Oleg Yakhnin represent the Professional Union of Russian Artists.
While Dobrovolsky’s talent may be said to consist of the ability to create the
illusion of motion in objects that are at rest, Tatarenko manages to transpose
the real into the realm of fantasy in The Circus is Tired. Yuri Zenin, on
the other hand, does quite well with the still - life, managing the best of both
worlds – oil and paper – by achieving the rich color spectrum of the former
while achieving the “light and lively” look of the latter. This combination of
traditional pigment and modern-looking medium is achieved to great effect in
Violins. Eagerly experimenting with new forms and fusions, then – even going
so far as to turn an ordinary spade into an object d’art that will eventually
find a home in a special museum - Dobrovolsky and Zenin are constantly on the
look-out to go beyond the status quo.
Known unequivocally as The Master, Oleg
Yakhnin’s fame has come to function as a touristic drawing card for St.
Petersburg. Having indisputably “arrived” in the Pantheon of Russian
contemporary art, Yakhnin’s surreal creations achieve what is so difficult to
achieve for any painter; to render a daringly original subject – through the use
of an equally original brush style and palette – without calling attention to
itself. The mother and infants depicted in Family are painted in engaging
earth tones that are artfully blended with hues of a brighter stripe. As
flagrant as is the artist’s violation of the bounds of Realism in this obviously
surreal depiction, he manages here to integrate form and content with a degree
of tact that renders the work patently original.
At this point we arrive at a quartet of
painters whose eye for color and propensity for the unconventional vis-à-vis
form and content put them squarely in the category of the ultramodern: Valery
Molchanov (1958 – 1998), Alexander Motylev, Yuri Shlykov and Anatoly Sivkov.
Cat
by Valery Molchanov is ultra-modern in its simplicity. A few commonplace objects
– a lamp, a table, a cat – are – a cat, a table, a lamp – are rendered simply
yet engagingly with a handful of colors – mostly blue and brown and black. They
are so well chosen that they draw us in with their simplicity rather than repel
us. (A suggestion of an animator’s style that calls to mind the work of Kahlo
and Picasso.)
Yuri Shlykov and Anatoly Sivkov are devotees
of the “street style.” The former’s Quintet offers a well resolved
tension between style and substance. Shlykov’s clowns are at table in various
stages of inebriation; a pleasing profusion of mid-blues and greens which
provide a powerful counterpoint in their chromatic naiveté to the sad
undercurrent of the piece. In an odd way the characters seem sad rather than
jovial, and perhaps it is this very tension between the viewer’s expectation of
an upbeat mood for an ostensibly festive setting and the actual pathos of the
piece that engages us so deeply.
The latter’s Jerikhon Tango depicts a
group of well dressed ladies and gentlemen in a social setting (cocktail party?)
The scene is full of people painted with (mostly) an impressive ensemble of
mid-tones. Although the style is somewhat primitive, the richness of the
composition and the ambiguity of the characters’ facial expressions (are they
sad, happy, thoughtful?) make this borderline surrealist piece an unqualified
success.
Oleg Golovko, a gifted theatrical painter with
considerable standing in the academic world, studied with the renowned Professor
Orberol in Paris after graduating from the classically oriented Saint Petersburg
Academy. His Acrobat collection seems to consist, at first glance, of post
modern versions of antiquated cave paintings. They are, however, handsomely and
effectively carried out with just a few well chosen colors that allow the
centerpiece – a simply drawn human figure in a quasi foetal position – to
impress us deeply with its conceptual boldness.
The works of Svetlana Gadzhieva, in
contradistinction to Golovko’s seriousness, are notable for their joyously
bright and vivid color palette as well as their contextual complexity. Her
medium-light blues and yellows in particular delight the eye with their
brightness and boldness while playing off nicely against the monumental nature
of (what seem to be) massive towers and a gigantic dirigible (Heavenly
Musicians).
In spite of the challenges that confront their
homeland at present, these painters believe in the future of their country and
of the world; a world which they succeed in viewing – as their work so admirably
shows – with a hopeful eye. If the goal of art, then, is to confer significance
on the surrounding world – to cast a spell on it, as it were, and to make us
think – then these painters can be said to have earned their place as world
citizens and benefactors of us all.
